2022.01.25 10:50 EmergencyEggplant712 Declaring you have an S.O. when applying for jobs in physics.
Hello everyone! I thought this might be a good subreddit to post this question.
I'll be asking questions specifically for careers in physics, but I believe it applied to many others as well, so please take a look :)
I'm a 4th year PhD candidate in physics and will soon start applying for jobs/postdocs and whatnot all over the county/world. I'm currently in a long term relationship with my Significant Other, and wanted to know the process of relocation worked when that's a factor.
When one of my professors got a position at my current university, the university also employed their S.O., which I believe was a condition imposed beforehand for them. Luckily they were both physicists, so I guess this facilitated the process.
My S.O. is also an educator but not at a college level. My questions are:
1 - When, traditionally when applying for a job, should you impose the condition that you can only relocate if employment can also be provided/facilitated for you S.O.? Is that only after you get an offer? Or do you declare that during the interview? (Not looking for an ethical discussion on this. As I understand, there is a consensus on when that should be disclosed, just don't know what that consensus is.)
2 - Does the institutes that I'll be applying to usually have ties with other lower education centers which may facilitate employment? If so, can that be taken advantage of? (I know I'm not specifying any, just getting a general idea.)
3 - What sort of level position would that kind of "S.O. employment facilitation" policy even be considered? I don't imagine postdocs would offer such a thing, but I imagine tenure track positions would. What else can you tell me about that?
I'll be asking similar questions to my advisor eventually, but I'd love to get a broad view :)
PS: I don't expect to get a tenure position right out of grad school (thought I'll still apply). I just want to get a general sense on when that's the case. If you know about the policies of industries in the private sector, please feel free to include them!
PS2: I don't expect the institute I apply to, to do all the work of employing by S.O., of course we'll also make our effort and look for employment nearby.

No trace of it really. Had a confirmation screen that I wish I took a screenshot of. Is this normal? Chat rep said I should see something in 2-3 days, but shouldn't it show in "pending transactions"?

2022.01.25 10:50 Melodic_Composer_578 Conscious about height
So i've been noticing a lot of eyes staring at me here and there. But I don't know what to do about it. I don't have it in me to go approach a girl cuz i'm only 5'9". After seeing all these girls (not all) on the internet saying how they wont date anyone under 6 feet. And I don't think I can face that type of rejection just cuz of my height. Am I wrong/alone to think that way?

2022.01.25 10:50 Just-Appointment4617 Thoughts on 2x HFEA as we move into a higher volatility environment
Long time lurker, first time commenter. I was wondering what people's take was on the 2x levered version of HFEA as we possibly transition out of the extended bull market we've seen over the last decade.
For clarity - I mean taking 50:50 UPRO:VOO and 50:50 TMF/TLT to constitute the 55% and 45% components respectively (rather than SSO/UBT). Having said that, I also wondered what people's take would be on replacing VOO with the much beloved Boglehead's VTI instead.
A little while ago u/modern_football posted some excellent analysis in LETFs looking at the CAGR for 3x and 2x HFEA for investment horizons ranging between 5-30 years. That analysis seemed to suggest that 3x was more optimal, higher CAGRs if you invested right before a period of great performance, and roughly equal CAGRs of you happened to invest right before the dotcom bubble bursting or the GFC. This would seem to suggest that 2x is less attractive than the traditional 3x approach.
Has anyone else in this community done any other meaningful analysis that looks to evaluate the 2x vs 3x options?

2022.01.25 10:50 battygau Losing 1.5 years
My counselor told me that I can graduate early. I have only 19 credits left after this semester and I'm a junior.
I don't want to leave yet.
I lost two semesters of college experience since my parents forced me to stay home for the entire COVID year (my sophomore year) and now I'm going to lose an extra semester on top of that. I thought about spreading the 19 over two semesters to focus on fall recruiting as well but I'm not too sure about this.
I know that I shouldn't be asking my parents to spend thousands of dollars for the sake of "the college experience," but I just would like to hear your guys' thoughts. How do the people that graduated in Fall 2021 feel about graduating early?

2022.01.25 10:50 Flyeagles_fly Breaks/separations ever work?
My ex (22F) dumped me (25M) after 4 1/2 years. It’s the second time we broke up both initiated by her because she is unhappy. First was after we moved on our own into an apartment (we lived with her parents for 3 years). This one was in November. First time we got right back together and worked on things. This time she moved out of the apartment entirely. She lives back home now. Initially she wanted to be friends and I said I don’t want to do that for my own sake. Went no contact for 3 weeks; some good days some bad days. After the three weeks she called and we hung out. This was around the holidays we got Covid and quarantined together. Since then we’ve been hanging out every week or 2. I talked with her yesterday and asked what we’re doing. She said she doesn’t want to be with anyone right now and wants to be single but there is no one else and I believe her. She’s admitted she feels in some ways she sabotaged the relationship and I told her she should go to therapy. I guess I’m saying all this to say. Has anybody ever had a break work? We’re both so young and have been together through college graduation, getting careers, moving on our own, and Covid. I understand something needs to change I just don’t know if it can.
